Apart from water resorts in Bulgaria, famous for their healing procedures, the local mud resorts are worth a special mention. They are in particular demand among those who are eager to find health in the autumn-winter season.
Mud resorts in Bulgaria, which attract tens of thousands of people every year, are famous for their high-quality lamaic mud – a unique natural product formed in lakes under the influence of various microbiological processes and possessing powerful healing properties.
The Bulgarian mud spas of Tuzla and Shabla are located in the extreme north-east of the country in the Tolbukha district: Tuzla is 4 kilometres away and Shabla is 40 kilometres from the town of Balchik. Bulgaria’s most famous mud resort, Pomorie, is located on the Black Sea coast, 19 km north of Burgas, and is connected to it by an excellent motorway, as well as by railway and steamship lines. Thanks to its convenient connections, as well as its legendary fame, the resort is especially widely visited by the sick and holidaymakers.
Lake Pomorie is a real treasure of Bulgarian nature. This salt lake is known far beyond the borders of Bulgaria and Europe. The limanic muds extracted here, rich in sulphates, magnesium, calcium, sodium, chlorine and hydrogen, are rightly considered to be among the most effective in the world. The muds of Lake Pomorie were used by the Thracians in ancient times to heal their battle wounds! A huge number of all kinds of useful microelements, which are part of the chemical composition of the mud, literally renew and revive all the most important centers in the organism when exposed to heat. That is why a person comes out of the Pomorie mud really renewed, full of new vitality and health. In general, Pomorie specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal apparatus and nervous system, gynaecological diseases and infertility, as well as skin diseases.
The modern national mud resort of Pomorie has a lot to offer to fans of medical tourism. Over many years of practice, it has accumulated an impressive base for recovery and treatment, it is the location of the largest sanatorium and spa complex in the Balkans, as well as the International Centre for the Treatment of Disabled Persons. The resort has several sanatoriums and holiday homes, a spa clinic, a mud bath, hotels, cafes and restaurants. Outpatient treatment of patients is widely practiced here, so those who live nearby or even in neighbouring resorts, such as Sunny Beach or Nessebar, can come here for treatments during the day and return home in the evening, tired and satisfied with the therapeutic effect.
By the way, Pomorie is famous not only for its muds, but also for its mineral waters, which are a rare and valuable type, because with relatively low mineralisation it contains a large amount of magnesium. On the other hand, a number of other Bulgarian resorts specializing in hydrotherapy also successfully offer mud treatments. Among them, for example, one can find such successful balneological resorts as Albena, Kyustendil and Banya.
It is worth noting that mud therapies in Bulgaria should preferably be carried out in the autumn-winter season, as in the hot season the thermal effect of mud on the body can have a number of side effects – for example, for people with weak hearts. When passions around beach holidays subside, many visitors and residents turn their attention to these healing springs of health, and we recommend you to follow their example!
