On December 23, 2023, a political agreement was adopted with the Ministries of Interior of Austria and Bulgaria on the extension of the Schengen area from March 2024 to include Romania and Bulgaria by air and sea. According to the information released, later in the year negotiations will take place to join the free movement area on land borders as well. There is no comment yet on the news from the Bulgarian authorities.
“The agreed date at the EU level for accession to Schengen for air and sea transport is March 31, 2024, and for land borders the prospect is 2025 – reported the Romanian newspaper Adevărul, citing government sources.”
