There is a chance for Bulgaria to introduce the euro from January 1, 2026. There will be no hindrance to introduce the euro as the official currency from January 1, 2026, sources from Brussels told local BNR correspondent Angelina Piskova. They specified that the decision on this should be taken by the EU Council, which is likely to happen this summer. At the moment, the only criterion that our country does not satisfy is price stability.

Bulgaria has already announced its intentions to demand an extraordinary convergence report on the fulfillment of the criteria on the eurozone. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that this will happen after the Eurogroup meeting scheduled for February 17. In the course of this forum, the new Bulgarian government and personally the new Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova plan to inform their eurozone counterparts about the efforts our country is making to meet the criteria. However, no decision on the issue will be taken at this meeting. Nor is there a deadline for Bulgaria to achieve readiness. In any case, we should wait for the Eurostat assessment, which will be notified in the spring.

If all conditions are met, there is a chance that Bulgaria will introduce the euro from January 1, 2026.
