You can ride a unique retro train from Sofia to Mezdra.

All lovers of retro trains will have a unique opportunity to enjoy a fabulous train ride with a real steam locomotive. The trip will take you through the Iskir Gorge, which offers incredibly beautiful views.
The retro-trip is organized by the Bulgarian Railways together with the Association “United Balkans” on the occasion of the celebration of the Bulgarian Independence Day, as well as the 135th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian State Railways.
On September 22, at 09:00 sharp, a special train consisting of four seated cars for passengers and one car of the government train “Vitosha Express” will depart from Sofia Central Station. The route of the retro-trip includes three stops at the stations of Kurilo, Rebrovo and Svoge, where a program of welcoming the train by representatives of the Association “United Balkans” will be organized.
The train will also stop at the stations of Lakatnik and Cherepish on the way to Mezdra, so travelers can avoid going the whole way and instead enjoy a mountain walk in the Lakatnik area or visit the Cherepish Monastery, where they can see one of the places that inspired Ivan Vazov’s work in the specially designated “Vazov’s Corner” of the monastery.
The price of a round trip ticket Sofia – Mezdra – Sofia is 71 BGN, and tickets will cost half price for all children under 10 years old.
Tickets for this train can be purchased at railway ticket offices at all stations in the country, as well as online at the Bulgarian Railways website.
